convert a go kart into a race kart?
I have a gokart no shocks no nothing regular diamond tread tires. I was wondering is in my highschool years could I possibly turn this into a race kart? like put a racing axel with racing bearings on and slick tires upgraded steering upgraded seat etc? I think It will be cheaper to do this than buy a race kart plus Its fun! but Im thinking just getting supplies/parts/tools from craigslist or ebay or yard sales. would this be a good project to do.
P.S. im in 8th grade about to go in 9th and going to be an engineer so I should have access to the shop for the school.
Most racing leagues require you to use specific parts on your cart depending on what class it is, so building a custom kart is not allowed in most leagues (the official reason is safety). So first have a look online for your local karting clubs and find out what you can and can't use. Having said that I can recommend at least getting a proper chassis as they can be surprisingly difficult to build and design well enough for what you'll want to upgrade on your kart.
