When Delays Allow for Some Sightseeing
Eighteen days had passed in the icy land of Antarctica, arriving at the airport according to the schedule have seemed to be the finest warm homecoming. There were four members of the expedition to the Antarctic returned home to receive a hero's welcome after nearly three weeks to walk the bottom part of the Earth. Life will be back to normal in his populated continent for this professor of astronomy and geology. Unfamiliar territories have been explored by these people in their other past adventures. Two of them went to Turkey last summer together with a scientific team viewing the solar eclipse from the coast of the Black Sea. Over there they actually found themselves in a similar situation as that of their unanticipated stay in the Antarctic. Other than the eclipse that they initially went there for they also had to stay because of a very strong earthquake.
The earthquake struck when the two were 200 miles away from its epicenter and so the magnitude they felt was only 5.5. His memories of Antarctica are less terrifying, images of blue ice fields, snow covered scenery and one of the best parts of the trip for him was camaraderie. The group was a little bit of an exclusive club, he said of the expedition team, which included retired NASA scientist.
This group of people was down to earth and you could easily speak with them. Much fun and zero egos is what they believed in. He says he'll fondly recall the days in Antarctica, even the unanticipated ones when the team read, talked, cross country skied and went out on snowmobiles. It was about a month ago when a the 24 year old team member shared with reporters and staff members her outfit for the trip and it includes boots, goggles, heavy gloves, and an energetic smile.
Of course she went home with a cheerful smile and some jeans, sneakers, and a sweatshirt. Her voyage to the Mars like continent was a result of her using space science in her classes. What it was for the students was a rare opportunity. When things are tied in then learning happens. Kids are exposed to science and history with an explorer for a teacher. Similar to the experiments back home were the ones she did during this trip normally focused on gravity, temperature, and rocks.
As well as satellite phone, email was also used to send the information to 11 classrooms. Not only the questions raised but also the answers given were hilarious. Amusing were the differences in all the answers given. Aside from being in a snowy desert, results can changes when you are in a place where temperatures can go below zero and this is what the students learned.
